CSM-BGBD Project Events

Closing Conference: Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity, May 17-21st 2010-ICRAF Complex Nairobi.

Having run for 8 years, the Conservation and Sustainable Management of the Below-Ground Biodiversity (CSM-BGBD) project is coming to a close in June 2010. As a result, the project team has decided to hold a closing conference to highlight the outputs of the project. The closing conference is scheduled for the 17th -21st May, 2010 in Nairobi at the World Agro-forestry Centre (ICRAF) Complex. The meeting aims to present the results obtained by the project that relate to the major findings and projected outcomes for the project. Invited individuals from associated and related projects will likewise present the results of their work in the same field. The objective being to showcase the status, create awareness, build capacity and demonstrate the benefits of this resource in ecosystems services as well as contributing to agricultural productivity.

The meeting will be graced by the Guest of Honor: Hon. Dr. Sally J. Kosgei, E.G.H., M.P., the Kenyan Minister for Agriculture. Other notable individuals will include: Dr. Jeroen Huising CSM-BGBD Project Coordinator, Dr. Achim Steiner, UNEP’s Executive Director, Mr. David Cooper, Senior Programme Officer, The Convention on Biological Diversty (CBD); Prof. Richard Mibey, Vice Chancellor Moi University, Dr. Dennis Garrity, Director General World Agroforestry Centre; Prof Freida Brown The Vice Chancellor United States International University (USIU); Prof Lucy Irungu, Principal, School of Biological Sceinces-Chiromo Campus; Mr. Japhat Agatsiva, Director, Directorate of Survey and Remote Sensing; among others.  The Project’s Steering and Technical Advisory committee members will be presented.

Over 90 Oral and Poster presentations will be made during the meeting with 43 oral and panel presentations and 47 poster presentations. Participants from related projects have been invited to make presentations and participate in the panel discussions. The proceedings of the meeting are expected to be published in high impact journals. The project will also be participating in the side event at the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) on the 19th May 2010 at United Nations (UN) Complex.
